• Note (General): 1994年におこなわれた国際微小重力実験室で、4匹の小さな日本のメダカ(Medaka, Oryzias latipes)が15日間の宇宙旅行に参加した。この4匹のメダカは、宇宙での交尾行動にはじめて成功を収めたセキツイ動物である。その上、そのメダカの産んだ卵は、宇宙で幼魚(稚魚)にまで正常発生した。通常魚は微小重力状態でループパターンを描いて泳ぐ。飛行機の放物線飛行による予備実験で、ルーピング行動を全く示さないこの魚種の特別な系統を見つけた。今回の宇宙実験の成功は、この系統を使用したおかげである。交尾行動の2シーンが宇宙からリアルタイムでダウンリンクされ、また、戻ってきたビデオテープにはさらに多くの交尾行動が記録されていた。この魚種では、放卵と受精が交尾行動中に同時におこなわれていた。1週目には毎日交尾と産卵をおこない、ミッションのほぼ終りになると、殆どの卵は、2つの色の付いた眼を持ち十分に発達した体を、中に収めていた。12日目の終りに稚魚が検出され、乗員は稚魚の写真を撮るのに成功した。全体で43個の卵が産み落とされ(検出できた)、そこから8匹の稚魚が宇宙でかえった(卵から孵化した)。まさに「宇宙を起源とする」赤ん坊である。着地後3日の間に30匹の稚魚が孵化した。地上で得たデータと比較すると、これは正常な孵化率である。4匹の成魚は着地後7日目に再び交尾と産卵を開始し、それ以降毎日交尾と産卵は続いた。4匹のメダカの子孫に対し、15日間の宇宙旅行の影響は全く検出されなかった。「宇宙を起源とする」赤ん坊は、いわゆるアダムとイブである。そうした地球のものではない魚達は、我々の研究室ですでに成長しており、地球上で彼らのコロニーを作りはじめている。; In the second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2/STS-65) mission carried out in 1994, four of a small Japanese killifish (Medaka, Oryzias latipes) made a space travel of 15 days. These four Medaka fish performed their successful mating behavior in space for the first time among vertebrate animals. Moreover, the eggs they laid developed normally till hatching fry (baby fish) in space. Usually, fish swim in loop patterns when they are exposed to microgravity. In prior experiments using parabolic flights of airplane, a special strain of this fish species that does not exhibit looping behavior at all has been found. The success of the present space experiment owes much to the use of this strain. Two scenes of mating behavior were down-linked in real-time from space, and more mating scenes have been recorded in the video-tapes brought back. In this fish species, shedding of eggs and fertilization of eggs take place at the same time during their mating behavior. Fish mated and laid eggs everyday during the first week, and near the end of the mission most of the eggs had a well-developed body with two pigmented eyes. At the end of 12th day, a baby fish was detected and the crew successfully took a picture of a baby fish. In total, 43 eggs were laid (detected), out of which eight baby fish were born (hatched out of eggs) in space, as truly 'space-originated' babies. 30 baby fish hatched within three days after landing. This is the normal hatching rate, comparing with the ground-based data. Four adult fish restarted mating and laying eggs on the 7th day after landing and continued to do so everyday afterward. So far, any effects of 15-day space travel on their offspring could not been detected. The 'space-originated' babies are, so to speak, Adam and Eve came from space.
