These alloys were selected for several reasons. First, a significant amount of work has been published on these materials. Second, the ease of processing and the idealized microstructure eliminates many second phase formation that occurs in more complex systems. Third, these alloys are used in industrial applications such as armor, penetrators, radiation containment, and cladding for corrosive environments. Lastly, the liquid and solid phases in this system has a density difference of almost 9 g/cu cm. Thus, any gravitational effects will be exaggerated compared to other liquid-phase sintering systems. The composition of the samples ranged from 78 wt. percent to 98 wt. percent tungsten in 5 wt. percent increments, with the remainder being nickel and iron in a 7 to 3 ratio. The samples were sintered for 1, 15, and 120 minutes at a temperature of 1500 C. In the absence of gravity, microstructural features were created that have never before been seen in tungsten heavy alloys.
