Note (General): JEM(日本実験モジュール)に向けた細胞培養装置の開発のための基礎設計データを取得するためにパラボリックフライト中の流体の取扱法を試験した。培養基をシミュレートした流体を各種のサイズおよび形状の細胞培養容器の中に注入、あるいは容器から採取した。その結果は、容器の厚さおよび流体の流速を適切に選定すれば、微小重力下でも気液界面を損なうことなく維持できることを示した。このことは容器内の空気を流体で置換、あるいはその逆も可能で、培養基の交換を可能にすること、およびその他の取扱手順がより容易にかつ簡単になることを示唆している。
The handling of fluids was tested during parabolic flights, to obtain basic designing data for the development of the cell culture facility for Japanese Experiment Module (JEM). Fluids mimicking culture media were injected into or drawn from cell culture chambers of various sizes and shapes. The results showed that the air/liquid interface could be maintained undamaged under the microgravity condition, when the thickness of the chamber and the flow rate of the fluid were appropriately selected. This suggests that the air inside the chamber can be replaced by the fluid or vice versa, permitting medium exchange and other handling procedures become easier and simpler.
