Note (General): 宇宙実験で得られた試料(Boule S)の外形は直径が2.7mm,長さが8mmであった。Boule Sは単結晶ではなく、(Fe,Ca,Y)Nb2O6、(Y,Ca,U)NbO4、Fe3Nb5O16、Nb2O5および(Y,Ca,Fe,U)(1-x)NbO4;x=0.04-0.1から構成されており、サマルスカイトは存在しなかった。Boule S中の化合物は地上で育成された結晶(Boule E)を構成する化合物と同じであるが、グレインの分布および大きさはBoule Eと異なっていた。Boule Eでは、Nb2O5が随所に存在していたが、Boule Sのでは、Nb2O5は融帯の溶液が凝固した所だけに存在した。このことは、地上では、晶出した結晶が溶液をトラップし、トラップされた溶液は凝固してインクルージョン(Nb2O5)に成っているが、宇宙では結晶が溶液をトラップすることなく晶出していることを示している。地上実験では、重力により溶液が結晶表面を移動し、析出した結晶を被い、融帯の表面積が大きくなるため、融帯の体積を一定に保持することが困難になる。ところが、無重力環境ではこのようなことも無く、容易に融帯の体積を一定に保つことができたため、直径の均一なブールが得られた。これは、溶液の組成を一定に保つことが容易であることを示している。これはTSFZ法で単結晶を育成するためには本質的に重要なことである。ブールの直径の半分以上の直径の気泡がBoule Sの中心にあった。地上では、気泡は浮力により融帯の上部に集まり、このように大きな気泡が結晶中に取り込まれることは無い。ところが、無重力空間では気泡が融帯内の流れに乗り、供給され大きくなったものと思われる。酸化物高温溶液中に於ける気泡の挙動は、半導体融液中におけるそれの挙動と異なっていると思われ、高品質の酸化物単結晶を育成するためには、酸化物高温溶液中の気泡の挙動に関する研究を進める必要がある。
The size of the samples obtained in space experiment (Boule S) was 2.7 mm in diameter and 8 mm in length. Boule S was not a single crystal but was constituted from (Fe, Ca, Y)Nb2O6, (Y, Ca, U)NbO4, Fe3Nb5O16, Nb2O5 and (Y, Ca, Fe, U)(1-x)NbO4; x = 0.04-0.1. There was no samarskite in this samples. Though the compounds in Boule S was the same as ones constituting the crystal grown on ground surface (Boule E), the distribution of crystal grains and grain size were different from Boule E. In Boule E, there were Nb2O5 everywhere, while in Boule S, there were Nb2O5 only where the solution of melts had been solidified. This phenomenon indicates that on ground surface, the melts trapped by crystallization became inclusions (Nb2O5) due to solidification, on the other hands, in space, the crystal was crystallized without trapping melts. It is difficult to keep the volume of melts constant in ground surface experiment, because the surface area of melts become larger due to movement of melts on crystal surface and covering of precipitated crystal by gravity. However, Boule with the same diameter was obtained, as it was easy to keep the volume of melts constant under microgravity. This is the evidence for easiness of keeping the chemical composition of melts constant. This fact is essentially important for growing a single crystal by means of Transferring Solvent Floating Zone (TSFZ) method. There were the bubbles with diameter larger than half of diameter of Boule at the center of Boule S. Such large bubbles could not be taken into a crystal on ground surface, because they aggregate at upper part of melts due to buoyancy. It is estimated that such large bubbles were formed under microgravity, since they were conveyed by flow in melts and then were incorporated. Since it is supported that behavior of the bubbles in high temperature oxide melts is different from behavior of bubbles in semiconductor melts, it will be necessary for growing high quality oxide single crystal to perform further investigations on behavior of bubbles in high temperature oxide melts.
