本稿では、科学技術分野での高性能計算(HPC)に対する性能要求の増大に応えると期待されるSX-5シリーズについて概説した。SX-5システムは高い演算性能とそれに見合ったメモリーアクセス性能をバランスよく兼ね備え、しかもSMP(対称多段プロセッサ)共有メモリーアーキテクチャを採用し、16台の各プロセッサから均質に最大128Gバイトのメモリーを利用することができた。しがって、プログラミングを行う場合に配慮すべき計算機の性能を引き出すためのプログラミング上の負荷をできる限り少なくし、ワークステーションでのプログラミングと同じ感覚で大規模な数値計算を実施できる計算環境を構築可能とした。
In this report, the SX-5 series which is expected to meet the increasing demand for High Performance Computing (HPC) in the scientific and technological fields is described. An SX-5 system has the best balance between high operational performance and memory access performance consistent with it, adopts SMP (Symmetric Multiprocessor) shared memory architecture, and can homogeneously utilize memories of up to 128 G bytes from 16 processors. Therefore, it can reduce the work load for programming required to optimize a computer capacity as much as possible and construct a computational environment under which a large numerical calculation can be carried out in the same way as in programming with a work station.
