欧州の主要3航空機メーカが将来の超音速輸送機ESCT(European Supersonic Civil Transport)の基本形状について合意した。この航空機には高い空力性能が要求されており、そのためには、推進系の空力設計が大変重要である。推進系全体の設計手法として、効率のよいCFD(計算流体力学)が有効であることが分った。そこで、AEROSPATIAL MATRA AIRBUS社が、推進系内外の部品を設計するためのノウハウを開発した。内部部品、すなわち空気取り入れ口、エンジンとノズルなどは全体として扱われなければならない。しかし、空気取り入れ口の性能は、航空機全体の形状に影響を与える。したがって、内部流れの性能と外部の流れによる抵抗とのかね合いも慎重に取り扱われなければならない。ナセルと推進系を統合した外部設計は、翼下面上の流れの注意深い解析から決定される。全推進系は全航空機抵抗を最小にするように決められるが、その他に局所的な流れやナセル間の強い干渉の問題を考慮する必要がある。CFDはこのような推進系内外の流れの解析を行う上で大変質の高い情報を提供した。
The three major aircraft manufacturers in Europe have agreed on a common configuration for the future supersonic transport aircraft, the ESCT (European Supersonic Civil Transport). High aerodynamic performance is required to such aircraft. Particularly the aerodynamic design of the propulsion system is utmost important. An efficient CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is very helpful and powerful in designing the whole propulsion system. Utilizing the CFD, AEROSPATIALE MATRA AIRBUS has developed the know-how of designing both the internal and external parts of the propulsion system. The internal components such as the air intake, the engine and nozzle need to be studied as a whole, but performance of a supersonic air intake has crucial influences on the overall aircraft configuration. Then the trade-off between internal performance and external drag is to be treated carefully in designing process. The external design of the integration of nacelle with propulsion system results from careful analysis of the flow pattern on the lower surface of wing. The complete propulsion system is determined from minimizing the total aircraft drag and local flow conditions and strong interactions among the flows of nacelles are considered. As a result, the CFD provided high-level information for the analysis on the flow both inside and outside of the propulsion system.
