Note (General): The flow-induced dynamic free-surface deformation in thermocapillary liquid bridges is investigated in the limit of small capillary numbers. The dynamic deformations of the basic flow and those of the critical mode are calculated numerically for small (Pr = 0.02) and intermediate Prandtl numbers (Pr = 4.38). Five physical effects contributing to the leading-order deformation are discussed. These are the hydrodynamic pressure, the viscous stress, the change of the volume due to thermal expansion, the temperature-dependence of the surface tension, and the temperature-dependence of the hydrostatic pressure. The magnitude and the phase of the dynamic surface-deformation wave relative to the magnitude of the temperature field are predicted for hydrothermal waves. It is shown that the leading-order dynamic surface deformations are caused by the flow fields at lower orders of the capillary number. Therefore, the leading order dynamic deformations do not feed back to the leading-order thermocapillary flow. This conclusion holds for the basic axisymmetric flow as well as for the non-axisymmetric three-dimensional supercritical flow close to the threshold.
