Note (General): This report describes experimental studies conducted at Yokohama National University during JFY2002 as a part of the Project Research on Marangoni Convection of National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA). The work consists of 1) development of a measuring method for surface velocity of Marangoni convection in a liquid bridge, and 2) simultaneous measurements of surface temperature, dynamic surface deformation (DSD) and surface velocity to clarify their phase relationship in oscillatory states of convection. In the first project, a technique based on particle tracking velocimetry using micro-fluorescent particles is developed. Both optimization of the optical configuration and the implementation of a depth-of-focus check algorithm enable resolving thin velocity boundary layers along gas-liquid interfaces. The technique developed is applied to steady, laminar Marangoni convections in liquid bridge and the results obtained are compared with the numerical simulations reported previously (Nishino et al., 2002). Good agreement between them is obtained for three Marangoni numbers (Ma = 8,000, 10,700 and 17,100). In the second project, the surface-velocity measuring technique is implemented into the previously developed DSD measuring system that is based on the use of the microscopic imaging displacement meter (MIDM). The surface temperature is measured using a fine thermocouple placed in the vicinity of the gas-liquid interface. Simultaneous measurements of surface velocity, DSD and surface temperature are conducted for pulsating and rotating modes of oscillation of Marangoni convection in a liquid bridge. The phase relationships among those quantities are first clarified and discussed in detail.
