Note (General): Recent technological progress has escalated the need for faster execution of increasingly complex scientific or engineering computation. On the other hand, the remarkable progress of computers heralded by the advent of semiconductor technology has accelerated the evolution of supercomputers meeting such demands. This tutorial presents an introductory overview of the architectures and highlights of recent scientific computers, focusing on the new wave of supercomputers. Historically several architectures for super-high-speed computation have been proposed: pipeline processing, parallel processing, and processor array, represented by CRAY-1, BSP (Burroughs Scientific Processor), and DAP (Distributed Array processor), respectively. During the past few years the world's leaders in this arena have developed or announced their latest models: CYBER205, CRAY X-MP, S-810 (Hitachi), VP (Fujitsu), and SX (NEC). All of these employ a pipeline approach and are highlighted by highspeed vector arithmetic, a wide coverage of vector processing, and large storage capacities. These capabilities are particularly characterictic of the Japanese supercomputers. For example, Hitachi's S-810 delivers a maximum vector arithmetic speed of 630 MFLOPS, vectorizes FORTRAN DO loops containing complex statements, and has a hierarchical storage organization consisting of up to 256MB of main storage and up to 1000MB of extended storage composed of semiconducter memory chips.
