A new upwind scheme for computation of incompressible flow has been developed. It was found that this scheme works well at high Reynolds numbers, even with a limited number of mesh points. By using this scheme, three different types of flows were computed. At first, a cavity flow was simulated at Re = 5000, with a 4 1 by 41 grid, and the results agree very well with the computation with a 257 by 257 grid by Ghia et al. Secondly, a flow past a circular cylinder was simulated. Results of the detailed calculations of the impulsively started flow at Re = 1200 are compared with corresponding experimental observations and the comparison is found satisfactory. A series of calculations of the flow around a circular cylinder with surface roughness was carried out over a Reynolds number range from 103 to l05. Remarkable reduction of drag co-efficient was observed, showing that a critical Reynolds number is obtained numerically in this calculation. Moreover, the present results were found to be consistent with the experimental fact that an asymmetrical flow state (such that the separation bubbles exist on only one side of a cylinder) is stably maintained in the critical range. Thirdly, a three-dimensional turbulent flow in a duct was simulated and large structures in the turbulent flow were captured by this scheme without any turbulence model. Agreement of statistical values with experiments was good. Moreover, the transition to turbulence was well simulated. These results show that this scheme is very widely applicable and is robust and easy to program for any type of incompressible flow computations.
