The effectiveness of microbubbles was proved by a full-scale experiment using a training ship of length over 100m. The skin friction decreased by 3%, which resulted in the net power-saving of 2%, by taking into account the energy needed for air injection. A PTV/LIF technique was used to measure turbulence of microbubble flows, and the reduction in Reynolds stress by bubbles was measured. The numerical simulation of bubbles injected into horizontal channel flow was carried out, and the skin friction reduction was successfully simulated.
