Note (General): Design, dvelopment and functional testing of flywheels have been demonstrated by hardware fabrication. A breadboard model reaction wheel, employing the permanent magnet brushless DC motor, has been fabricated and evaluated through functional testing. The principle design objectives for the reaction wheel assembly were; 1.Minimum size and mass 2.Precision torque 3.Low power consumption 4.Excellent linearity and controllability A pre-engineering model momentum wheel has also been fabricated and friction torques have been thoroughly evaluated in a wide range of temperature environments(-35C～+70C). The mechanical design is described in some detail, with particular attention being paid to the bearing design - preload, oil reservoir. Other outstanding features of the design are its high momentum to weight ratio and high torque brushless DC motor.
