Torsional strength tests of pressureless-sintered silicon nitride were carried out at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 1400C in air. The torsional strength rapidly decreased at temperatures above 800C ; at 1400C it was 15 percent of that at room temperature where a value of 349 MPa was found. Observations of the fracture mode and of the crack propagation on the fracture surfaces were made and discussed.
