Note (General): An air heater with vitiation by hydrogen for use in scramjet combustor ground tests was designed, manufactured, tested, and improved. Oxygen fraction distribution in the heater exit plane was made uniform by injecting oxygen into the air feed line. Hydrogen and temperature distributions were made uniform by increasing the number of hydrogen injector elements, arranging them uniformly, and adjusting their orifice diameters. Oscillatory combustion was observed in the early design of the heater, but it was stabilized by attaching suitable flame holders to the tips of the hydrogen injector elements.
