Note (General): Autoignition and flameholding characteristics of hydrogen fuel injected transversely to a supersonic air flow were experimentally examined in a cylindrical scramjet combustor with a rearward-facing step. Autoignition occurred when air total temperature was above 1500K. There were three categories of autoignition; (a)ignition occurred in the separation region at the combustor exit produced by a shock wave due to over-expansion of the flow, (b)ignition occurred in the regions of shock wave impinging on the combustor wall, and (c)ignition occurred in the vicinity of the injection holes or the step. The flameholding position moved complicatedly with the change of air total temperature. The position was at the step for air total temperatures below 1600K, while it moved downstream of the step for temperatures between 1600K and 2500K. For temperatures above 2500K, the flame was anchored by the step again.
