Note (General)トライボロジー特性に優れる新しい宇宙用潤滑材料の開発を目指し,二硫化モリブデン(MoS2),耐火金属の酸化物(MoO3,MoO2,WO3,WO2,Ta2O5,Nb2O5)および耐火金属(Mo,W,Ta,Nb)からなる自己潤滑性複合材料をホットプレス法によって作成し,真空中,窒素ガス中,大気中でのトライボロジー特性をリング(440Cステンレス鋼)/円板(複合材)型摩擦試験により評価した。試験した範囲の条件(面圧0.5～4MPa,すべり速度0.11～0.55m/s)で最も良好なトライボロジー特性を示したのはMoS2 80％＋MoO2 10％＋Nb 10％の組成の複合材で,特に真空中では摩擦係数0.07以下,比摩耗量10(exp -11)mm3/mm・N以下というきわめて良好な性能を示した。また,MoS2 80％＋Nb2O5 10％＋Nb 10％,MoS2 80％＋MoO2 10％＋Mo10％やMoS2 80％＋MoO2 20％などの組成も良好な特性を示した。良好な特性を示した複合材の場合には,相手材表面に薄く一様な転移膜が形成されていた。複合材のX線回折から,ホットプレス中にMoS2が分解されMo2S3が生成されること,また,酸化物や金属を添加することによりMoS2の分解が促進されたり,化学反応が引き起こされることがわかった。次に,摩擦試験で良好な特性を示した複合材ですべり軸受を試作し,真空中,450度までの温度で試験を行なった。軸受は100度までは良好な耐摩耗性を示したが,300度になると比摩耗量がやや大きくなった。450度ではステンレス鋼製の軸が摩耗したが,軸受のX線光電子分光分析から,複合材軸受と軸が反応を起こし鉄の硫化物が生成され,鋼が軸受側に移着したためであることがわかった。複合材軸受に起因する異常なアウトガスは高温下でもみられなかった。複合材と反応しない相手材を選択することにより,試作した複合材は常温～高温での真空中の用途に有望である。
Tribological characteristics of hot-pressed self-lubricating composites were investigated to develop new high-performance tribo-materials for space applications. The composites consisted of molybdenum disulfide(Mos2), refractory metal oxide(MoO3,MoO2,WO3,WO2,Ta2O5,or Nb2O5), and refractory metal(Mo,W,Ta,or Nb). Friction tests were performed in a vacuum, in nitrogen and in air atmospheres using ring-on-disk type friction testsers. The best material composition under the applied test conditions(contact pressures of 0.5-4 MPa and sliding speeds of 0.11-0.55 m/s) was found to be MoS2 80％＋MoO2 10％＋Nb10％. In a vacuum, this composite showed a coefficient of friction of less than 0.07 and a specific wear rate of less than 10(exp -11) mm3/N・mm. Good tribological performance was also obtained with MoS2 80％＋Nb2O5 10％＋Nb10％, MoS2 80％＋MoO2 10％＋Mo10％ and MoS2 80％＋MoO2 20％. For the composites showing good tribological performance, a thin, uniform transfer film was formed on the steel ring surface. X-ray diffraction results showed that Mo2S3 was present in almost all the composites; thereby suggesting that MoS2 partially dissociated into Mo2S3 during the hot-press process. It was also found that the addition of the refractory metal oxide and/or metal promoted both the dissociation of MoS2 and the chemical reaction among the involved species. Sliding bearings fabricated from the best composites, being determined from friction test results, were run against 304 stainless steel shafts at temperatures up to 450C. Bearing wear was slight at less than 100C, and markedly increased at 300C. After being subjected to 450C testing, a weight loss of the shafts was observed. An X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS) analysis showed that a chamical reaction occurred between the composite and the steel shaft, causing material transfer from the shaft to the bearing. The composites showed no abnormal outgassing at high temperature, thus they are promising for use in high temperature vacuum condition, if mated with a counterpart which does not chemically react with them.
