This study evaluated compliance with the structural strength requirements of aviation safety regulations, focusing on the use of Welchair, a non-foldable manual wheelchair designed for automobile use, and a bar-type wheelchair securement system in an aircraft cabin. Static and dynamic load testing showed that the tested wheelchairs and securing anchor bars did not fracture, and their deformation did not seem to impede emergency evacuation. In addition, the lumbar loads of anthropomorphic test devices remained below maximum allowable thresholds in dynamic load tests. In other words, the results indicated promising conformance to structural strength requirements. However, the entire wheelchair slid laterally during the tests owing to the absence of a lateral constraint in the bar-type wheelchair securement system used in this study. Considering the possible effects on emergency evacuation, it is important to make improvements that prevent sliding.
