近年、光格子時計を始めとする超高安定度の周波数基準技術が急速に発展し、すでに地上では18桁の精度に到達している。同程度の精度を持った周波数比較技術と組み合わせて気球高度と地上間での双方向のレーザー周波数比較実験が実現できれば、従来の一般相対性理論の検証精度を大幅に改善できる可能性がある。そのために必要となる飛翔中の気球との光リンクの実現に向けて、高精度衛星測位結果に基づいて小型気球を自動追尾しつつレーザーを照射する地上局を構築し、小型気球でレーザーを受光することで、この方式での送信光リンクが実現可能であることを実証した。
Ultra-high stability frequency reference technologies, including optical lattice clocks, have advanced rapidly in recent decades, achieving 18-digit accuracy in ground-based systems. If frequency comparison experiments can be conducted at balloon altitudes in conjunction with precise frequency transfer technology, there is potential to significantly improve the validation accuracy of General Relativity. To enable a two-way optical link between the ground and a balloon, a novel balloon tracking system utilizing high-precision GNSS positioning has been developed. A laser collimator and telescope are mounted on an altazimuth mount, which is controlled to automatically track the balloon. The feasibility of this one-way laser link system has been demonstrated by successfully receiving the ground-emitted laser with photodiodes onboard the balloon.
