E=hνは光の振動数とエネルギーを結びつける式であると思うのが普通ではないだろうか。しかし,この式は光に対してだけ適用される式ではなく,あらゆる物質(波)に対して適用しうる非常に重要な一般式ということを忘れてはならない。光のもつ粒子と波の二重性の理論を展開し,光子の運動量がhν/cであることを導出したのがEinsteinであるという事実からすれば,E=hνは物体の運動の波動性を表すde Broglieの式λ=h/pと合わせて,「Einstein-de Broglieの式」と呼ばれるべきものである。本書は,物体の運動を表現する根本式としてのE=hνとλ=h/pの意味を解説するmonographである。
