Note (General): 私たちが古英詩を読む際は、一般に‘edited text’で読むのが普通である。頭韻ごとに前半行・後半行に行分けされ、文の開始や固有名詞には大文字が当てられ、多様なパンクチュエーションが施された、言わば現代的な統語に組み替えられたテクストを読むことになる。一方、言うまでもなくアングロサクソン時代の写本テクストには、このような“visual cues”（視覚的手がかり）は乏しく写本ページいっぱいに「べた書き」様式で書かれたものとなっていて、現代の書式とは大いに異なっている。古英詩の読者はこのような書式のテクストをどのように読んだのか、また読み込めたのであろうか。翻れば, 写字生（または作者）は読者のためにどのような手法を用いて写本テクストを作成し、本文を読み解く情報を与えていたのであろうか。これらを解明するために、Daniel Donoghueは本書において新しい知見などを取り込みながらの考察を展開している。本稿では本書の内容を詳しく紹介し、アングロサクソン人が自分たちの詩をどのように読んだのかというDonoghueの見解を、コメントを交えながら追ってみた。本書の構成は、Introduction, Chapter 1（How to Read）, Chapter 2（From Orality to Punctuation）, Chapter 3（Verse Syntax）, Chapter 4（Eye Movement）, そして単にConclusionとする代わりにLess a Conclusion Than an Opening Up となっている。これらに沿ってDonoghueの各論点の内容を確認しながら、本書の特徴を記してみた。
