[概要] 本研究は、マイクロ波放射計によって捉えることが難しい陸上の背の低い降水システムを、可視・赤外放射計データから精確に判別された雲域データを組み合わせることで推定精度の向上を目指す。衛星搭載可視・赤外放射計およびマイクロ波放射計による観測データから、降水を伴う雲システムを判別する手法を開発し、衛星降水マップの精度向上を試みる。熱帯降雨観測（TRMM）衛星に搭載された降雨レーダー（PR）と可視・赤外放射計（VIRS）を用いて、観測範囲全域で適用可能な降水を伴う雲域推定分布（ポテンシャルマップ、PM）を作成する。陸上の背の低い降水システムは上空の氷粒子による散乱シグナルが弱く、降雨判定・推定が難しいため、雲域では降雨の判定基準となる闘値を変更して降雨と判定しやすくするなど、マイクロ波放射計から降水量を推定するGSMaP（Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation）アルゴリズムの中で、雲域データから降水判定精度を向上させる手法を構築する。ポテンシャルマップの誤差情報をGSMaPアルゴリズムに導入する方法についても検討する。これらの手法導入後の降水マップを作成し、TRMM搭載降雨レーダ（PR）を用いて降雨判定・推定制度を検証する。改善が見られれば、この手法を他の衛星搭載可視・赤外放射計およびマイクロ波放射計（AQUA衛星搭載MODISとAMSR-E、静止気象衛星とSSMIなど）に拡張する。
