[はじめに]閉鎖型苗生産システム（古在、1999)は、成育環境が人為的に制御される施設内で植物を計画的に生産する植物工場のコンセプトを継承しながら、既存の植物工場が持つ問題点を改善したシステムとして注目されつつある。本稿では、植物工場の歴史および現状と閉鎖型苗生産システムの概念およびそのシステムにおける高付加価値苗生産に関して論じる。
