[ABSTRACT] The most recent guidelines on crop water requirement calculations are based on the Penman-Monteith equation (PM), using a minimum resistance to evapotranspiration. The use of PM demands specific knowledge of crop and meteorological parameters. Effects of the treatment of these parameters and the user's knowledge of the potential evapotranspiration calculations are demonstrated for a spring wheat crop at field scale. The errors could be substantially high if improper meteorological and crop parameters were adopted. Verification was carried out against state-of-the-art measurement techniques applied in the Heihe River Basin project (HEIFE) in Northwest China.
