Note (General): The number of students enrolled in institutions of higher education (undergraduate courses, graduate schools, junior colleges, etc.) has shown a consistent growth during the last 26 years, reaching 2,325,000 persons in 1986. Of these students in 1986,university students numbered 1,880,000 (including the students of graduate schools, advanced courses, short-term courses, etc.) 3.0 times the 1960 level, and junior college students numbered 396,000 (including the students in advanced courses, short-term courses, etc.) 4.8 times the 1960 level, for a total of 2,276,000 or 3.2 times the 1960 level. The proportion of private school students in the total enrollment in institutions of higher education rose from 66.0% in 1960 to 72.5% in 1986. The proportion is rising year by year both among university students and junior college students, reaching 72.5% and 90.3% respectively in 1986,thus suggesting a large weight borne by private schools in the quantitative expantion of higher education. The proportion of female students in the total enrollment in institutions of higher education grew from 20.0% in 1960 to 34.9% in 1886 as a whole, from 13.7% to 24.5% at the university level and from 67.5% to 90.3% at the junior college level.
