Jōsai Hōshi den was written by Asakura Kagehira (also known as Kusakabe Kagehira). This book is a manuscript copy made by Morita Mitsuru in 1740. It is an interview with an old Buddhist monk named Jōsai (Jōsai Hōshi) who stayed in Ryukyu in his youth. Asakura Kagehira, the author, was a shogunal retainer and was also knowledgeable about government official rituals and their origins. Material no. HW542 Jōsai Ryukyu Monogatari zen (manuscript) is the same content as this book.
