- 開拓使は明治6年（1873）3月、アメリカ人、ジェームス・R・ワッソンを測量長に任命して三角測量事業を開始した。この事業は、ワッソンを中心として多くの日本人技師を使っての北海道初の近代測量であった。同7年5月、ワッソンに替わってモルレー・S・ディが測量長に就任、石狩川とその支流の河川測量、基線・助基線測量、沿岸線測量、天文測量、三角測量などを行ったが、同9年、事業は僅か4年間で中止された。このときの測量成果によって作成されたのが本図である。東京都銀座彫刻会社で印刷されたもので、石版・無彩で縮尺は50万分の1。凡例には「明治八年十二月、開拓使」とあるが、実際の刊行は9年に入ってからであろう。内陸部は未測量のままであるが、沿岸線は従来の図には見られない正確な図形であり、近代測量図として記念すべき図である。（高木崇世芝/文）
