「異国物語」は、神力丸乗組員のうち、讃岐国（現香川県）出身の水主(かこ)勝之助からの聞書の写し。神力丸には岡山以外からの雇い水主が4人おり、勝之助もその1人。勝之助が地元で語った体験談を森嘉左衛門が書き留め、これを、天保5年（1834）3月に書き写したものが本書と思われる。巻末に「勢州山田住」とあり、写したのは伊勢国山田（現三重県伊勢市）の人と思われる。
