『服部郷図考聞書』は平賀元義が記したもので本館のものはその写しだと考えられる。井上真澄は窪屋郡笹沖（現在倉敷市）の足高神社の神主で，元義の門人であった。また『備中国賀夜郡服部郷図』の持主である禰屋七郎兵衛は賀陽郡服部郷を戦国時代に支配していた冠山城主禰屋七郎兵衛の一族だと考えられる。『備中国賀夜郡服部郷図』は永仁6年（1298）に破損したために書き改められ，暦応2年（1339），天文5年（1536），元禄8年（1695）にもそれぞれ写し直されている。天文５年，元禄８年の写しは禰屋氏の手によって書き改められていることは明らかで，禰屋氏が代々引き継いできた図であるといえよう。『備中国賀夜郡服部郷図』の原本の成立時期について平賀元義は『服部郷図考聞書』の中で大化改新のころに作成され，備中国国府に伝えられたとする。しかし，永山卯三郎は『岡山県農地史』の中で寿永3年（1184）ごろに成立したのではないかと主張している。「阿弥陀講田」「検非違所」「国分寺」「国領」などの語句とともに「真正門」「久清門」のように門田，門畠を示す表現もあることから，平安末から鎌倉期初頭に原本が作成されたと推測できる。
