- 太政官少納言局(外記局)の職員である外記の補任表。701年(大宝元)から1500年(明応9)までを収録対象とする。編年順(各年の中は官職ごと)に在職した人物を排列し、位階、姓名、記事内容を記す。 『続群書類従』に収録された「外記補任」(尊経閣文庫および宮内庁書陵部所蔵)をもとに、古記録などの諸史料から新たに作成した期間も掲載する。 巻末に、約800人の外記の在職期間、出自・縁戚、生歿・主要経歴、参考文献を記した「外記考証」、10氏17種の系図を掲載した「外記系図」、「解説」、「人名索引」(五十音順)を付す。
