• Introduction (Introduction of Reference Books): 本書は、アメリカで出版された『Encyclopedia of Bioethics, 3rd edition』の邦訳である。同事典はケネディー倫理研究所を研究拠点にして1978年に初版が編纂され、バイオエシックス(生命倫理)という全く新しい学問分野の確立に大きく貢献した。1995年に第2版、そして今回の翻訳の原典になった第3版が2004年に刊行された。本書の内容は、生命倫理一般、及び生命倫理に深く関わる宗教、政治、経済、人類学、法学、社会学、医学、看護学まで幅広い分野に及んでいる。各項目には、学生から専門研究者まで幅広く役に立つ詳細な参考文献や、関連項目への相互参照が付いている。また、第5巻には、生命倫理に関する規約(綱領)、誓約(誓詞)、宣言、章典、主要な訴訟事例、文学と医学に関する注釈付き参考文献などが多数収録されている。
