音楽をはじめる子供たちのための、ピアノとソルフェージュの教本。ピアノを「弾く」ことは常に「歌う」ことの延長にあること、そのために早期に十分な「読譜能力」を付けること、そして鍵盤に触れるときにはすでに「表現」が始まっていること、を目標とする。桐朋学園大学附属「子供のための音楽教室」の指導方法や「コダーイ・システム」のリズム唱などを用いて、音感や読譜力などの基礎力を、ピアノを使って順序良く楽しく学ぶ。第１巻はレッスンの場で、絵本を読むような感覚で生徒と一緒に読み進めるので、宿題がいらない。読譜指導を五線ではなく線のない3つの音の形の把握から始め、その後、一線譜から五線譜へと導入するのも大きな特徴で、この方法によって、移調や多様な音部記号に対応できる総合的な能力を養われる。全編を通じて伴奏の響きが美しく、また雨田光弘のかわいいネコのイラストが本を楽しく彩る。
