- Seita Vuorela's 'Karikko' (Engl:'Reef') is perfect proof that even the international fantasy fiction boom can be used by authors to supplement their own artistically ambitious efforts in a way that makes new and significant changes to the entire genre. Vuorela's style has rightly been described as magical realism, because the settings she has created are in some cases completely magical and absurd. Reef is intended for all those readers who don't want their reading pre-packaged: it's a book that is self-sufficient in a positive way, aware of its own enchantment. On its back cover it has with good reason been given a dual classification: for young people and adults. 'Reef' also has dystopian features, involving an apocalyptic atmosphere that lurks constantly in the background, in many different ways. The novel's landscape is a dilapidated camping site and storage silo and the tragic events that take place there, events that are not resolved until the very end of the narrative. Vuorela's book draws on the reality of decay and on feelings of inevitable destruction and abandonment. Its text can be perceived through many different senses, which respond to the rising stench of seaweed, the mould of damp rooms, surfaces etched by rust, the melancholy that haunts deserted houses. In the central focus of the novel is a family - in particular, a pair of ill-matched brothers, the fourteen year-old Mitya and his two years older sibling Waldemar. The narrative centres on the blood bond between them, but also on their sorrow, abandonment and guilt. Vuorela builds the plot piece by piece, as a mosaic of flashbacks, hints and loose pieces. For the reader this technique is a fairly challenging one, but it also has its rewards.The principal narrator is Mitya, who also brings the readers into the story in a friendly way and addresses them from time to time, as if encouraging them to believe that the narrative's many-branched complexity can easily be resolved. Mitya makes the acquaintance of boys who hang about on the edges of the campsite, rejects who seem to be strangely in thrall to the Maiden who lives in Hotel Horizon. Several background texts come to mind in connection with the novel. Many of its reflections on the society and the individual may recall to the reader such books as William Golding's Lord of the Flies, Alexander Mellin's The Children's Government (Barneregjeringen) or Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games trilogy. Seita Vuorela makes use of ancient legends from sources like Greek mythology and Finnish folklore (with its Maiden of Death), as well as classical fairytales, especially Hans Christian Andersen's The Wild Swans. For good reasons that are linked to the plot, the adult characters, and especially the children's parents, appear as transparent and weak-willed shadows who have lost any real authority or points of contact with their children. Jani Ikonen's cover art is stylish and visually captivating, with an immediate appeal for its two groups of readers. At certain turning-points in the narrative there are also black-and-white photo-illustrations by Ikonen, and these can be interpreted as mental landscapes.
