Note (Content): Das epochale Ereignis der Russischen Revolution wird meist als Geschehen im Zentrum Russlands erzählt. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt hingegen die Perspektive der einheimischen Kommunisten im russischen Kolonialgebiet Turkestan ein. Turkestanische Muslime begriffen die Revolution als Chance. Modernisierung und nicht nationale Unabhängigkeit standen für sie im Vordergrund. Sie suchten die Unterstützung der Bolschewiki im Zentrum gegen ihre Widersacher in Turkestan. Ihre Selbstbezeichnung als Kommunisten transportierte den Anspruch auf Teilhabe an der Regierung. Die Untersuchung zeigt, wie die muslimischen Kommunisten in Turkestan Modernisierungsprojekte initiierten und durchsetzten, auch wenn sie in der Auseinandersetzung mit Vertretern der Zentralgewalt häufig der schwächere Partner waren.
