- Eine Neue Europaeische Graphik zu formen, das hatten Lyonel Feininger und Walter Gropius im Sinn, als sie im Jahr 1921 aus dem Bauhaus in Weimar europaweit die Künstler der Avantgarde aufriefen, gemeinsam ein Mappenwerk der Druckgraphik entstehen zu lassen. Ihrem Aufruf folgten 45 Künstler, die sich teilweise zuvor noch als Feinde im Krieg gegenüberstanden. Willi Baumeister, Max Beckmann, Umberto Boccioni, Marc Chagall, Giorgio de Chirico, Erich Heckel, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Kurt Schwitters, Gino Severini - jeder für sich ein Avantgardist. Gemeinsam vertraten sie die verschiedenen Strömungen der europäischen Moderne. Über ihre druckgraphischen Arbeiten in einem Mappenwerk konnte die Idee der Moderne international vervielfältigt, verbreitet und Sammlern preiswert zum Kauf angeboten werden. Die Staatsgalerie zeigt in der Ausstellung ihr Bauhaus Mappenwerk und ergänzt es um druckgraphische Arbeiten weiterer Bauhausmeister. Erweitert wird der Blick durch den, der Ausstellung vorgeschalteten Stuttgarter Prolog, der sich Adolf Hölzel und Ida Kerkovius widmet. Hölzel war Lehrer von Johannes Itten und Oskar Schlemmer, Kerkovius seine Assistentin, die von 1921 bis 1923 am Bauhaus in Weimar studierte. Vieles der späteren Lehre in Weimar findet sich bereits bei Adolf Hölzel. Exhibition: Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Germany (20.03. - 19.07.2020)
