Note (Content): Seit der ersten Publikation von Roland Barthes? "Das Reich der Zeichen" vor fünfzig Jahren haben sich die Wahrnehmung Japans und seiner Kultur im Ausland und, umgekehrt, die japanische Auseinandersetzung mit ?dem Westlichen? deutlich verändert. Heute erscheint ?Japan? vermehrt als Schnittstelle von Diskursen, in deren Zentrum das Zitieren, die Bearbeitung und Verwandlung von ?Zeichen? stehen, die auf Japan und auf die als ihm entgegensetzt verstandene ?westliche? Welt verweisen. In ihnen wirkt das Imaginäre von ?Japan? und dem ?Westen? als dessen Gegenüber nach wie vor als ästhetisch produktiver Impuls für ein breites Spektrum kultureller Konstruktionen und Transformationen. Die aus mehreren Workshops an der Universität Wien hervorgegangenen Fallstudien des vorliegenden Bandes untersuchen diese "Schnittstelle Japan" an Beispielen aus verschiedenen Medien und in diversen kulturellen Kontexten.
