- La narratrice de ce livre vit dans une ancienne école maternelle. Tout y est petit, adapté aux enfants qui autrefois la fréquentaient et rien n'a bougé. Cette femme vit seule mais en ces lieux se trouve un auditorium devenu le refuge d'étranges petites boîtes. Quand elle se promène c'est pour rejoindre des inconnus qui ont pour point commun d'écouter en pleine nature une musique singulière. Sa cousine, qui lit beaucoup, parcourt toujours le même chemin.
