- Fils d'empereur écarté de la succession impériale, le prince Takaoka (un personnage historique du IXe siècle) se fait bonze et entreprend, vers la fin de sa vie, un voyage vers la Chine, puis vers l'Inde, où il n'arrivera jamais. Il serait mort dans la péninsule malaise, dévoré par un tigre. C'est sur cette trame historique que Tatsuhiko Shibusawa imagine un périple émaillé de phénomènes fantastiques, d'animaux mythiques et de fleurs monstrueuses, en forme de questionnement de la réalité : si le monde n'est qu'une illusion, alors il y a plus de sagesse à conduire sa vie sur les fictions de ses rêves qu'à les refuser comme vanités. Reste à savoir "voir" ses rêves. C'est tout le propos de ce roman fascinant à mi-chemin de Calvino et de Tolkien, du Voyage vers l'Ouest et de Dragon Ball
