Kyosai (1831-1889), ce peintre génial qui alliait la maîtrise technique la plus sûre à un esprit de liberté fort rare à son époque, réinvente une tradition qui remonte au moins au XVIe siècle, en livrant une version époustouflante de la Procession nocturne des cent démons.En tête court une armée de squelettes pourchassée par des monstres, d'un coffre surgit une ribambelle de démons, sandale, poêle ou gong pourvus de bras et jambes, grenouille dentue, parapluie surmonté d'un unique œil, lion à tête d'éléphant... c'est toute une fantasmagorie du bizarre et du grotesque qui défile sous nos yeux, puisant largement dans le répertoire foisonnant des yôkai, tengu, kappa et oni du folklore japonais.
