Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Goto Islands

The Goto Islands is a collective name for five islands in the western part of Kyushu. The Goto Islands are close to mainland China and used to be a port of call for Kentoshi (envoys sent to the Tang Dynasty) and a base for Wako (Japanese pirates). During the Edo period, most of the islands became Goto domain territory. The entirety of the Goto Islands was designated as Saikai National Park in 1955.
