Exploring Japanese Landmarks in Nishiki-e and Photographs

Oi River

A Class A river flowing south through the central part of Shizuoka Prefecture. It drains into Suruga Bay from its source at Mt. Ainodake in the northern Akaishi Mountain Range. It is one of the most difficult sections of Tokaido Highway. In the Edo period, the shogunate prohibited the construction of bridges and ferry crossings, so people crossed the river on palanquins carried by or the shoulders of kawagoshi ninsoku, who earned a living by helping people cross the river. The Shimada-juku Oi River Kawagoshi Ruins, where the kawagoshi ninsoku station and other buildings have been reconstructed, is designated as a National Historic Site.
