The list of API-providing databases

This is the list of API-providing databases. You can check whether the metadata you want to use is licensed or not.

For a general overview of using APIs, please refer to “How to use NDL Search API”. For a general overview of each database, please refer to “The list of NDL Search databases” (Japanese page only).

1. Databases providing Search APIs or Harvest APIs

Data provider

Databases which provide the metadata for NDL Search.

Repository number

The unique number of the databases in NDL Search. It is included in the item number of each metadata.

Data provider ID

Identification data which is used to specify a database.

Metadata use terms

○：You do not need to apply to use the metadata of the database.
△：You need to apply to use the metadata of the database.

On the application, please refer to “How to use NDL Search API.”
When a Creative Commons license is displayed on the metadata use terms, you do not need to apply to use the metadata. Please abide by the license.
By using open as the data provider ID, you can search and harvest the metadata which is open data (CC0, CC BY).
Note: The terms below are the metadata use terms. If you want to know the terms about the content, you must check each database's content use terms.

When metadata of UTokyo Academic Archives Portal displays the license of the metadata, the license displayed has priority.

The metadata provided by the Japan Publication Registry Office (JPRO) includes upcoming book metadata, printed book metadata, eBook metadata, and audio book metadata. Upcoming book metadata may be different from published book metadata. The data provider IDs of JPRO are as below.
- jpro： All metadata provided by JPRO
- jpro-book： The metadata of upcoming books and printed books provided from JPRO; subset of jpro
- jpro-online： The metadata of eBooks and audio books provided from JPRO; subset of jpro
- jpro-audiobook： The metadata of audio books provided from JPRO; subset of jpro-online
- jpro-online-repository： The metadata of eBooks stored in the repository of the Digital Publishers Federation of Japan provided from JPRO; subset of jpro-online. The metadata includes "リポジトリ収録資料" as "Collection (particular)."
- jpro-online-tts： The metadata of eBooks which have a text to speech function provided by JPRO; subset of jpro-online. The metadata includes "TTS対応（Text to speech）" as "Digital File Characteristics."

Details of the National Diet Library (NDL) data providers

The catalog of the NDL

National Diet Library Catalog (iss-ndl-opac): The catalog of the NDL. It includes books published in Japan, books in non-Japanese languages, postdoctoral theses, maps, periodical volumes, and other materials in the NDL.
It does not include the below.

NDL newly acquired bibliographic data (iss-ndl-opac-inprocess)
NDL Periodical Index (zassaku)
NDL Periodical Index (Online) (zassaku-online)
NDL Digital Collections (ndl-dl)
NDL Digital Collections (Online Publications) (ndl-dl-online)

National Diet Library Catalog (Not Including Periodical Volume) (iss-ndl-opac-bib): A subset of the National Diet Library Catalog (iss-ndl-opac) that does not include the metadata of periodical volumes. It is equivalent to the metadata set which was provided as National Diet Library Catalog (iss-ndl-opac) until December 2023.
Japanese National Bibliography (iss-ndl-opac-national): A subset of the National Diet Library Catalog (iss-ndl-opac) that includes the completed metadata of the Japanese National Bibliography; Japanese publications acquired via the legal deposit system and Japanese publications and foreign publications in Japanese acquired through donation or purchase. The metadata has national bibliographic numbers. It does not include the metadata provided by the National Diet Library Newly Acquired Bibliographic Data (iss-ndl-opac-inprocess). It does not include the metadata of periodical volumes. It is equivalent to the metadata set which was provided as Japanese National Bibliography (National) (iss-ndl-opac-national) until December 2023.
National Diet Library newly acquired bibliographic data (iss-ndl-opac-inprocess): The metadata of the Japanese National Bibliography* currently being created. It can be acquired about four days after publications arrive at the NDL. Since it is unfinished metadata, it may be revised later. In SRU, you can also acquire the metadata by specifying inprocess=true.
*Not including maps and materials in Asian languages.

NDL Periodical Index

Japanese Periodical Index (zassaku): An index of articles from domestically published Japanese language periodicals (partly including foreign periodicals in Japanese and Japanese periodicals in foreign languages). The periodicals are selected based on the "JPI Periodical Selection Criteria.” Articles in the periodicals are selected based on the "JPI Article Selection and Indexing Criteria". It does not include the metadata of the NDL Periodical Index (Online) (zassaku-online).

The periodicals are selected based on the "JPI Periodical Selection Criteria (Online)”. It does not include the metadata of articles of the NDL Digital Collections (Online Publications).

NDL Digital Collections

NDL Digital Collections (ndl-dl): NDL Digital Collections. The metadata of digitalized materials of the NDL. It does not include the metadata of the NDL Digital Collections (Online Publications).
NDL Digital Collections (Online Publications) (ndl-dl-online): NDL Digital Collections (Online Publications). The metadata of publications on the Internet which the NDL acquired after July 1, 2013, and publications by the NDL on the NDL homepage.
NDL Digital Collections (Open data) (dl-open): The open metadata of the NDL Digital Collections (ndl-dl) or NDL Digital Collections (Online Publications) (ndl-dl-online). Its license is equivalent to Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0.

Other

NDL Online Publications (Article) (ndl-article-online): The metadata of articles from online publications. It includes the metadata of the NDL Periodical Index (Online) (zassaku-online) and the article metadata of the NDL Digital Collections (Online Publications) (ndl-dl-online).
