- マンハッタン工兵管区（DSM管区）は、1942年8月13日に設置され、原子爆弾プロジェクトに係る研究・開発及び実験の監督、ウラン濃縮を行うテネシー州オークリッジのクリントン工場、プルトニウム生産を行うワシントン州リッチランドのハンフォード工場、核分裂性物質の最終処理と原子爆弾への装着を行うニューメキシコ州ロスアラモス実験場といった各研究所及び実験場の管理、施設・人員の維持管理を所掌した。管区といっても地理的な管轄区域があるわけではなく、任務として原爆開発計画の指揮という特別な管轄領域があった。
「マンハッタン」の名称は、同管区の本部が一時的にニューヨークに置かれたところから付けられたものであるが、DSM（Development of Substitute Materials、代替材料開発）という名称が、聞いた人の好奇心をかきたて好ましくないとされたためであった。 - 原所蔵機関
