James Gomez氏は、タイ・バンコク及びマレーシア・ジョホールバルに拠点を有する研究機関「アジアセンター（Asia Centre）」のRegional Directorであり、コミュニケーション、人権を専門分野としている。Robin Ramcharan氏は、同センターのExecutive Directorであり、東南アジアにおける人権・知的財産・安全保障問題、及び国際関係学を専門分野としている。[1]

本書のポイント

東南アジアには、法規制により「フェイクニュース」を取り締まる国があり、同地域は「言論の自由や民主主義に重大な影響力を持つ反フェイクニュース法制の、世界で最も活発な実験室」[2]とも称されている。

本書は、それらフェイクニュース関連法制の状況等、東南アジア諸国のフェイクニュースをめぐる諸相について、選挙民主主義や表現の自由への影響に焦点を当て分析を行っている。例えばシンガポールについての第9章では、同国で2019年に施行された「オンライン虚偽情報及び情報操作防止法」（Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act: POFMA）が、政権与党による批判勢力抑制の新たな手段になっていると指摘し、分析を行っている。

本書は、選挙の際のフェイクニュースの状況、フェイクニュースと当局の関係等、フェイクニュースをめぐる東南アジア諸国の現況を理解するうえで役立つ1冊である。
