- Summary, etc.
-
This study presents a life history of a top-level Japanese handball coach representing the handball sphere. We focused specifically on the coaching aspect, and aimed to document important events and actions that led to his mastery of instruction as well as the lessons learned from this process. A 1:1 semi-structured interview with the coach was conducted to create a dialogue. Interview content was qualitatively analyzed and interpreted, revealing the following three points. 1) The coach’s perspective on instruction changed with the level of competitiveness, and moved from “Draw out athlete dedication, encouraging them to practice handball ambitiously”, to “actualize the coach’s own view of handball by providing direct intervention from the instructor”, then finally to “shoulder the athletes with responsibility, cultivating their skills so that they can be independent and address a wide variety of situations on their own”. 2) In coaching the athletes to develop their own tactical leverage, this coach emphasized the importance of both developing the capacity to choose plays according to the particular situation and adjusting the positioning and timing in accordance to the opponents. 3) From the early stages of instructing, this coach supplemented and enriched his own instruction experiences by turning to his own personal instruction practices and reflections upon these, as well as instruction practices of others. This allowed him to accumulate superior instructional skills.
