「梅花歌卅二首并序」は、和歌序という文体を考える上で重要な意味を持つ。天平期に「序」は初唐の詩序を学ぶことによって、文学の一ジャンルとなった。それは長屋王詩苑での試みに端を発するもので、その周辺の文人たちによって序が作られるようになっていく。初唐の詩序は、それ自体、前時代の文学を学び、新しいジャンルを作り上げていった営為の成果として評価されている。日本においても、同様のことが試みられていたと考えられる。本和歌序はもとより『蘭亭序』の影響が指摘されているが、初唐の詩序の構成等の影響と、多彩な漢籍の知識によって作られている。こうした技法的な詠作により切磋琢磨しあう文芸集団が発生していたことが伺われ、本和歌序は、新しい文体を作り出そうとしていた天平期の文人たちの、文学的な挑戦として評価できるものである。
