- 研究報告書平成16年度-平成17年度科学研究費補助金 (基盤研究(C) 一般 ヨーロッパ語系文学 課題番号16520140) 研究成果報告書今回の研究の対象である、18世紀末のロンドンで活動した書籍商ジェイムズ・ラッキントン(James Lackington,1746-1815)は、それまでのロンドン書籍販売業界の商慣習を破って売れ残り本の安売りを行い、薄利多売の方針と徹底した現金取引へのこだわりによって財を成した革新的な商人です。しかし同時に彼は、『ジェイムズ・ラッキントン四十五年の半生の回想』(初版1791年)などの自伝によって、彼が生きた時代のイギリスの書籍販売や読書行為の現状を生々しく伝えた文人でもあります。今回の研究では、ジェイムズ・ラッキントンとその周辺の書籍商に的を絞り、彼らが書き残したテキストと彼らについて書かれたテキストを読み辺むことによって、活版印刷文化が本格的に一般民衆に浸透していく18世紀末のイギリスで、ラッキントンたちの売る行為と書く行為がどのような意義を持っていたかを検証していきます。
