5. Bibliographic Records

The bibliographic records screen is used to check the details of the materials.
You can check detailed bibliographic information such as authors, table of contents, classifications, etc., as well as access to materials.

5-1 Structure of the bibliographic records screen

The basic structure of the bibliographic records screen is as follows. If there is no content to display in each area, the area itself will not be displayed.
The National Diet Library Search displays the same materials held by multiple institutions together. For this reason, there are parts that provide information that is common to each material, and there are places that provide information for each holding institution.

Breadcrumb MenuThis is a breadcrumb menu, which is displayed to guide you to your current position when the material has a hierarchical structure, such as title-volume-article. By using this area, you can transition to materials in a higher level.
Digital ViewerThis area is displayed when digital materials are available for viewing. If the material is available via Internet, you can move to the browsing page.
Basic bibliographic informationBasic information about the material is listed. Displays thumbnails of the material, basic bibliographic information.
Menu for using materialsView a guide to access the material. In addition, there are menus for utilizing the bibliographic information of the materials, such as bibliographic information output buttons.
In-Page MenuMenus for shortcuts are placed in each area of the bibliographic records screen. It will follow the screen scroll.
Table of Contents AreaDisplays the table of contents of the material, if it exists. If there is a large table of contents, it will be divided and displayed when you click "See More".
Volume issue listThis is an area where you can list the volume number that is associated with the Title-level Bibliography .
Frequently Used LibrariesThis is displayed when you are logged in and have set "Frequently Used Libraries".
Holdings of other libraries in JapanIf each institution that NDL Search affiliates with has a holding, it will be displayed in this area.
Collection of the National Diet LibraryDisplays the status of the National Diet Library's materials. If you are logged in, you can request from this area.
Search at BookstoreThis is an area where you can go to the bookstore site.
Read in Resources for Persons with DisabilitiesIf there are materials in a format for persons with disabilities (e.g., Braille or DAISY), display a link in this area.
Detailed bibliographic informationDisplays detailed bibliographic information.
Related MaterialsThis are is displayed when related material can be identified from the information contained in the material, such as the same author or series.
Search by Related ThemeDisplays materials that have a similar theme or that deal with a more detailed theme. Click to search by that theme.

Below, we'll walk you through the details of each element.

This is displayed if the material has a hierarchical structure and has related titles and volume numbers. For volume numbers, links to title-level bibliographies are displayed, and for articles, links to both volume-level and title-level bibliographies are displayed.

5-3 Digital Viewer

This is the area where digital materials are displayed when they are available. You can check the terms of use of the materials and transition to the browsing page.

If digital materials are present in both the National Diet Library and other libraries in Japan, two buttons will appear.
If there are conditions for browsing, a guide will be displayed. Please check before using.

5-4 Basic bibliographic information

Displays basic information about the material, focusing on frequently used bibliographic items.

Thumbnail/material icon (1-a)If there is a thumbnail, the thumbnail is displayed. If there is no thumbnail, the icon corresponding to the document type will be displayed. Thumbnails are displayed when there is at least one document image in the linked data of each institution. Therefore, the appearance of the materials held by each institution may differ. The thumbnails displayed include thumbnails of the National Diet Library Digital Collections, thumbnails included in publication information, and thumbnails of digital materials archived by other institutions. Please note that, as a general rule, the exterior of the box and cover is removed and preserved, so in many cases you will not be able to see the cover displayed in the thumbnails of the publication information. In addition, the exterior may have changed due to bookbinding, etc.
Title area (1-b)Displays the title, the call number of the National Diet Library, and the bibliographic ID of the National Diet Library.
Bibliographic area (1-c)Displays basic bibliographic items with icons. The material type and media type of the material are displayed in all materials. Other items are displayed according to the nature of the material, such as author, publisher, year of publication, number of pages, size, etc. Click "More to see" then you can go to detailed bibliographic information.
Related Materials, before-and-after material(1-d)If there are related materials or Predecessor and Successor periodicals (before/after the title change when the title is changed in a serial publication and becomes another serial publication), a link will be displayed.
Material details (1-e)Displays precautions for using the NDL's materials, notes on the materials, and details of the materials (details of content, synopsis, summary, author introduction, etc.). If it is a long sentence, it will be omitted. You can view the full text by clicking "See All".

Title Bibliography, the volume area with this title is displayed.
Basic bibliographic matters
When you click on a volume number, you will be redirected to the bibliographic records screen of that volume. In addition, by clicking "other", you will be redirected to a search results list page that focuses on the volume issue of the title.

A guide on how to use the materials is displayed in three categories: use in libraries, bookstores, and use of materials for people with disabilities. This is a simple guide, so please check each link for detailed instructions on how to use it.
In addition, guides that utilize the data of the material itself, such as linking with favorites and SNS, and using bibliographic information, are also displayed.

National Diet Library(2-a)Displays how to use the library. The status of the collections of the three main libraries of the Tokyo Main Library, the Kansai-kan, and the International Library of Children's Literature is displayed as icons. If you can visit the NDL and use the material, the "Visit and use" button will be displayed, and if the remote photoduplication service is available, the "Request a copy without visiting the NDL" button will be displayed. If you are logged in, you can check the details of how to use it by pressing the button. If you are not logged in, the login button will be displayed.
There are cases where the collection is located outside the NDL premise you plan to visit, or even if the button is displayed, it may not be available due to restoration or digitization work of the materials. When you visit the library, be sure to click the button to check the "National Diet Library Collections" for detailed information on how to use it. In addition, even if you check how to use it, you may not be able to use it because the materials are in use or working on the day of your visit.
If there are other materials available, they will be displayed in the follow area. Please check it as well.

    In addition, if NDL Search is not able to identify the data of other institutions, you may be able to find materials in the NDL's collection by searching again even if the materials are not displayed in this area.
Other Libraries in Japan (2-b)If the collection is held by an institution that is linked to NDL Search, the number of cases and a button will be displayed. Please check the detailed collection information at the transition destination.
Search by bookstore (2-c)Displays a button that transitions to the "Search at a bookstore" area.
Read in disability resources (2-d)Displays a button if there are materials for persons with disabilities. Please check the details of the usage format and usage method at the transition destination.
My list/Copy URL Button(2-e)

    Click to add the material to your My list (only when you log in).
  • Copy URL
    Click to copy the URL of the page to the clipboard.
SNS link (2-f)Click to link the URL to X, Facebook, Line, SNS, and e-mail.
Output bibliographic information (2-h)Opens a dialog for outputting bibliographic information. For details, see Bibliographic download(in Japanese).
Search in other databases (2-i)Transition to Databese Linker. You can search the text of materials and collection information in other databases.

A table of contents is arranged for shortcuts to each area of the bibliographic records screen. It will follow the screen scroll.

5-7 Table of Contents Area

Displays the table of contents of the material, if it exists. If more than one volume has a table of contents, each volume number will have a separate area.
The displayed table of contents includes data from the National Diet Library Japanese Periodicals Index, a table of contents of reference books, collections, and materials selected by the NDL staff from the books and journals in the library's collection, a table of contents for materials in the National Diet Library Digital Collections, a table of contents included in publication information, and information included as a "table of contents" in the bibliographic information of other libraries in Japan.

Search box (3-a)It allows you to search the table of contents by keyword. If you want to clear the conditions narrowed down by the search, delete the keywords you entered and run the search again.
Volume number (3-b)Displays the volume number corresponding to the table of contents.
Table of Contents (3-c)Displays the table of contents. If Article-level bibliography exists, you can move it by clicking on it.
Show more (3-d)If the number of cases is large, it will be displayed with the number of cases. Click to view the full table of contents. If the number is larger, it will be displayed separately on pages.
Digital material Transition Button (3-e)Displays when the digital document is available and can be transitioned by table of contents. Click to move to the target page.

5-8 Volumes issue list

This is an area where you can list the volume number. This area is diplayed at part of title-level bibliography.
It is basically the same as Search Results List, and you can change the number of displays, narrow down the number of volume numbers, change the sort order, and search by keyword.

5-9 Frequently Used Libraries

This is displayed when "Frequently Used Libraries" is set while logged in. It is displayed using the API of CarlileLeave the NDL website. .
Clicking on the link will take you to the library page. Press the "Set" button to move to the setting change screen.

5-10 Holdings of libraries in Japan

If each institution that NDL Search works with has a holding, it will be displayed in this area. Even if the name of the institution is listed, there may be more than one location, or it may contain materials that are not available. Please be sure to check the status of the materials of the holding institution before using it.

Sort Order (4-a)Sets the sort order of the library. You can select the order of prefecture and kana. In the prefectural order, the display is grouped by districts. "Other" shows scholarly information agencies and search services that are specifically available regardless of region.
  • If the system does not have a value for the name of the institution, it will be listed last.
Narrowing down by the media type(4-b)You can filter by media type.
Holdings (4-c)Displays a list of institutions that hold materials. By clicking on the link, you will be redirected to the site of each institution. You may be able to transition to an individual material page, or you may be redirected to the top page.
Set up the frequently used library (4-d)Click to go to the "Frequently Used Libraries" setting screen.
See more (4-e)Click to see all holding institutions. This is displayed when the number of institutions holding the collection is large.

5-11 National Diet Library Holdings

Displays the holding status of the National Diet Library. If you are logged in, you can request from this area.
This area will not be displayed even if there are no materials in the collection of the National Diet Library or materials that can be requested for, such as when they are available via Internet. Also, if "List of volumes" is displayed in the title-level bibliography, this area will not be displayed.
There are two display formats depending on the score of the material.

  • Display when the number of materials in the collection is small
    If there are several materials in the collection, such as a book, the collection information will be displayed for each holding library.

  • Display when the number of materials in the collection is large
    If there are multiple volumes, such as magazines and newspapers, the entire collection of the NDL will be displayed together. It is not displayed by service point, but it is possible to filter by year, volume, or collection instead. If there are more than 21 items, they will be displayed separately on the page.

Collection Information and Add Cart

When you click on the collection information, the login button will be displayed if you are not logged in, and the add to request cart button will be displayed if you are logged in.
The buttons displayed and whether or not they can be added to the request cart vary depending on the type of user and the condition of the materials.

How to read the collection information

Materials: Paper, Micro, and Recording Media

  • Volume, Date, etc. (5-a)
    Displays information about the volume and year, month, and day of publication.
  • Local Call Number (5-b)
    This is the call number assigned to each collection.
  • Barcode (5-c)
    This is the number assigned to the item individually.
  • Location (5-d)
    It is a place where materials are kept.
  • Caution icon and usage message (5-e)
    A caution icon is displayed when the material is not available, such as "in use", "in progress", or "in working".
    If you visit the library because there are materials on the open shelves, you can view the materials without going through the request on the system, and a message about use will also be displayed.
  • Add to request cart button (5-f)
    It is displayed in two areas: "Visit and use" and "Use without visiting". If the button is inactive, you will not be able to request. * Displayed only when you are logged in.
  • Notes on request (5-g)
    If there is a service menu available in the building after browsing, it will be displayed.

Materials that are displayed as "We have materials that are not displayed in the list
If there is no data for some of the volumes in the collection, the material information "Materials that are not displayed in the list" are displayed.
If the volume you want is not in the list of collections, select this material information and click the Add to request cart button.
When the volume number input dialog or the copy part input dialog is displayed, enter information that can identify the volume number date and add it to the request cart.

  • There are some materials that cannot be requested through the system and need to be visited and filled out a document request form. If so, a message is displayed.

Media type: Digital

  • Digital Link (5-h)
    Displays a link button to the NDL Digital Collections.
    Click the link button to move to the content viewing screen of the National Diet Library Digital Collections. The visibility range is also displayed.

  • Add to request cart button (5-i)

  • Displayed only when you are logged in.
    This is displayed for digital content that is available for remote request for photoduplication. If the button is inactive, you will not be able to request.

About Interfacility request for browsing

When you are logged in, materials that may be available for interfacility request for browsing are displayed with a link to "Request for Interfacility request for browsing" at the bottom of the National Diet Library's collection area. By clicking on the link, you can start the request process for interfacility request for browsing.

  • Even if the link to order is displayed, it may not be available depending on the condition and usage of the material. For details, see Interfacility request for browsing.

5-12 Read in Materials for persons with Disabilities

Braille, DAISY, large-print books, LL books, audiobooks, barrier-free video materials, and other materials in an easy-to-use format are displayed when they are available.

5-13 Detailed bibliographic record

Displays detailed bibliographic information. By default, it is collapsed, and you can see it all by pressing "See More". It remembers the state of opening and closing, and once it is displayed in its entirety, it will be displayed in the open state thereafter.

If you press "See More" to display all the bibliographic information, and the bibliographic information differs for each type of the material, the table is displayed separately for each type. For example, there is a case where the digitized date and date information is in the digitized material.
Re-search from bibliographic record (7-d)If bibliographic information is displayed as a link, click it to search again by item value. If the URL is displayed as a link, clicking on it will take you to that URL.
Link to Web NDLA (7-e)Click the "Authority" icon displayed to the right of the item to move to the detailed information page of the authority data of Web NDL Authorities. Icons are displayed in the Title Heading, Author Title, Genre/Format Terms, and Subject Headings.

5-14 Related materials

Displayed when related material can be identified from the information contained in the material, such as the same author or the same series.
You can increase the number of materials displayed by pressing "See more".

5-15 Search by related theme

If the subject line has been cataloged and is searchable by related theme, the "Search by related theme" area will be displayed. Click to search by subject heading. If there are many related themes, they are collapsed. You can increase the number of materials displayed by pressing "See more".
