『平家物語』の中では鹿ヶ谷での密議の密告者として有名な多田行綱であるが、近年、義経の武功譚として有名な一の谷合戦での鵯越の逆落としを行った人物として注目されるようになってきた。行綱は、平氏の運命を変える二つの大きな局面で重要な働きをした人物であると考えられるのである。そうした彼について、『平家物語』での造型を見極め、これまで行われてきた歴史的研究も併せて考察することで、後白河院や近衛家との密接な関係が彼の行動の背後にあることが明らかになった。『平家物語』での造型はそれを受けたものだったのである。
