Note (General): 境内海道西遺跡は、法勝寺川左岸の丘陵斜面に位置する弥生時代から中世に亘る複合遺跡である。弥生時代後期から古墳時代前期にかけて集落域、古墳時代中期から後期の古墳群、そして奈良時代から平安時代にかけては再び集落域となった遺跡は、平安時代末に祭祀的な遺構が作られた後、中世には墓域に転換していく。このような丘陵遺跡の土地利用の変遷を明らかにすることができた。特筆すべきものとして、4基の円墳のうち早里17・18号墳の周溝内埋葬墓から出土した供献土器は、当時の葬送儀礼の一端を示すものとして興味深く、また土師器と須恵器のセット関係として、編年資料としても注目すべきものであると思われる。
