Note (General): 山草荷遺跡は，新潟県の弥生時代中期後半を代表する遺跡である。平成26年１月にその出土土器が新発田市有形文化財に指定されたことから，資料集としてここに全容をまとめたものである。なお，「山草荷遺跡」は学史的な遺跡名であり，遺跡台帳は「山草荷Ⅰ遺跡」である。　山草荷遺跡の土器は，東北南部の川原町口式系，秋田県域の宇津ノ台式，北陸の小松式，中部高地の栗林式という東西南北の４系統で構成される。中でも，細い沈線で胴部に大きな渦状文を描く川原町口式系の壺を主体とする。また，宇津ノ台式に小松式の要素が折衷した土器は，本遺跡に特徴的である。
